FAQ

What is Vibrant Streets™?

Vibrant Streets™ is a program that helps communities revitalize neighborhoods by creating thriving retail districts through technical expertise and community engagement. The focus of the program is to give neighborhoods necessary tools to create a Vibrant Street of their own, regardless of population, ethnic composition, location, income, or budget.

How did you create the Toolkit?

Vibrant Streets™ originated from a study completed by Streetsense of Bethesda, MD in April 2012. Announced by Mayor Vincent Gray, the DC Vibrant Retail Streets Toolkit became the foundation for all of the research that has taken place to date. At the presentation of the Toolkit, Harriet Tregoning, Former Director of D.C.’s Office of Planning, stated, “The District of Columbia has all the ingredients to be an extraordinary retail city. The Vibrant Retail Streets Toolkit provides the framework to help achieve this vision.”

Can I apply the Vibrant Streets™ Toolkit to rural or suburban areas?

Yes! In late April 2014, we published a National Vibrant Streets Toolkit that can be applied to any community in the United States, regardless of size, typology, income, density, racial demographics, or socioeconomic class.
